October on the Gulf Coast: Things to Do in Pensacola, Perdido Key & Gulf Shores
October on the Gulf Coast? YES, PLEASE. ππ
The summer crowds are calming down, the temperatures are finally becoming a little more civilized, and there is still plenty to do from Pensacola to Perdido Key to Gulf Shores.
Whether you're bringing the kids, visiting with grandparents, planning a couples' getaway, or just looking for something fun to do on a fall weekend, October is one of my favorite times to be here.
π Fall Festivals & Events
π¦ National Shrimp Festival β Gulf Shores
If you've never been to the National Shrimp Festival, October is your chance!
Gulf Shores comes alive with seafood, live music, artists, vendors, and plenty of food. It's a great multi-generational event because there is something for pretty much everyone.
And let's be honest...
When the Gulf Coast throws a party, there will probably be shrimp. π
πΊ Flora-Bama Oktoberfest
Head toward the Florida-Alabama line for Flora-Bama Oktoberfest.
Think German food, music, beach vibes, and a whole lot of fun. It's definitely one of those uniquely Gulf Coast experiences.
π‘ Pensacola Interstate Fair
Late October means FAIR TIME!
Carnival rides, games, funnel cakes, fair food, entertainment, and all the nostalgia that comes with a good old-fashioned county fair.
It's a fun choice when you're traveling with multiple generations because the little ones can ride until they can't ride anymore, while the adults can enjoy the food and entertainment.
π» Halloween on the Gulf Coast
October 31 brings plenty of Halloween fun, including the Flora-Bama Halloween Costume Contest.
And if dressing up isn't your thing, there are plenty of fall events, markets, haunted attractions, and Halloween activities happening throughout the area.
π Enjoy the Beaches Without the Summer Madness
One of the BEST things about October?
The beach.
The water can still be beautiful, the sand is still white, and you don't have to fight the middle-of-summer crowds quite as much.
Check out Johnson Beach in Perdido Key or explore the beaches around Gulf Shores and Pensacola Beach.
October is also a great month for simply walking the shoreline, watching the sunset, collecting shells, or letting the kids burn off some energy.
π¬ Get Out on the Water
Don't assume October means beach season is over!
A dolphin cruise or boat tour is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. Get out on the water, enjoy the sunshine, and see the Gulf Coast from a completely different perspective.
And yes, bring your camera.
You'll want it.
πΏ Explore Our State Parks
If you're ready for something besides the beach, there are some beautiful natural areas to explore.
Big Lagoon State Park offers trails, water views, and plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy nature.
Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park is another beautiful option for experiencing the unique ecosystems of the Gulf Coast.
And if history is more your thing, head out to Fort Pickens and explore one of the area's most fascinating historic sites.
π» Take a Little Fall Drive
Want something a little slower?
Take a drive over to Bellingrath Gardens in Theodore, Alabama, and check out the fall displays and gardens.
It's a great option for families traveling with multiple generations because not every activity has to involve running, climbing, or getting sand everywhere.
Sometimes Grandma just wants to look at pretty flowers. π
π€ And Don't Forget to Eat!
You can't come to the Gulf Coast and NOT eat seafood.
Find a waterfront restaurant, order the fresh catch, grab some shrimp, and enjoy the view.
That's basically a Gulf Coast requirement.
πΈ And If You're Here for Family Photos...
October is also a fantastic month for family photography.
The weather is becoming more comfortable, the beaches aren't quite as chaotic, and those fall colorsβdeep blues, greens, browns, burgundies, and neutralsβlook absolutely beautiful against our Gulf Coast scenery.
So if you're visiting Pensacola, Perdido Key, or Gulf Shores this October and want to remember the trip with more than a camera-roll full of phone pictures...
You know where to find me. π
October on the Gulf Coast is pretty hard to beat.
Come for the beach. Stay for the shrimp. Make some memories while you're here.
