Near Gulf Shores: Discover Bamahenge, Dinosaurs, and Pirate's Cove
Planning a beach vacation to Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, or Perdido Key? While everyone hopes for sunshine, a rainy day doesn't have to ruin your vacation. One of my favorite hidden gems is just a short drive away in Elberta, Alabama—Bamahenge and the incredible attractions at Barber Marina.
Bamahenge is a full-size replica of England's famous Stonehenge, tucked away among the pine trees at Barber Marina. It's completely free to visit and makes for a fun stop that's unlike anything else you'll find on the Gulf Coast. Created by artist Mark Cline, it's become one of Alabama's most unique roadside attractions. As you continue exploring the marina grounds, you'll discover life-size dinosaurs hidden throughout the woods. Kids love searching for the giant T-Rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, and Brontosaurus, while adults usually find themselves just as amazed.
Be sure to have your camera ready because these larger-than-life sculptures make fantastic family photos. Don't miss the beautiful Italian Neptune fountain, the famous Lady in the Lake, and the giant spider sculpture that surprises visitors around nearly every corner. Barber Marina is full of unique artwork and quirky surprises, making it an unforgettable stop whether the skies are sunny or gray.
After you've finished exploring, head over to the legendary Pirate's Cove. Grab a burger, sandwich, or Bushwacker, relax with the locals, and enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets on the bay. If you're lucky, you'll even spot dolphins swimming through the water while you unwind after a day of adventure.
